Winter Recreation
You'll be amazed by how many activities, like snowmobiling, snow coach rides, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, are enjoyed in Yellowstone during the chilly but unbeatably scenic winter months.
Dogsledding
The greater Yellowstone Park region is fast becoming a destination for dogsledding, both in terms of recreational fun and serious racing. Many companies offer dog sled tours. A guide handles the dogs from the back of a sled while you ride on the front.
Snowmobiling
If you are looking to combine fun, scenery, wildlife, and adventure, then taking a guided snowmobiling trip through Yellowstone is the perfect excursion. Several commercial companies offer guided trips to the attractions of Yellowstone including Old Faithful.
Cross-country Skiing in Yellowstone
Most of Yellowstone is backcountry and managed as wilderness; many miles of trails are available for skiing. Track is set only on a few trails. All unplowed roads and trails are open to cross-country skiing. Guided cross-country treks are the best.
Snowshoeing
Yellowstone has miles of trails for the winter adventurer. Strap on some snowshoes and head out on a winter hike. As with all activities, if you are unfamiliar with the activity or the area, it is best to go with a guide. Remember that you are traveling in wilderness with all its dangers: unpredictable wildlife, changing weather conditions, hydrothermal areas, deep snow, open streams, and avalanches.
Snowcoach Tours in Yellowstone
Hop on a snowcoach and leave the over-snow driving to somebody else. Snowcoaches have been operating in Yellowstone National Park since 1955 providing a warm passage into Yellowstone's winter wonderland.
Ranger-led programs
Ranger-led programs are offered at Old Faithful and Mammoth Hot Springs during the winter months.
Wildlife Viewing
The best in winter wildlife viewing might include moose, elk, bald and golden eagles, bighorn sheep, bison, wolves, coyotes, trumpeter swans, and mule deer. The pristine winter wonderland provides a unique backdrop to all of these animals.
