Dog Sledding
Nothing gets the heart pumping more than to be strapped snuggly into a dog sled being whisked away by 10-12 truly excited canines who live to run. Though Yellowstone National Park does not allow these tours inside its boundaries, they are available from outfitters such as these below in many of the gateway communities just outside its borders.
Some of the region’s best mushers, who also compete on the international circuit, live, train and provide tours to the Park’s many winter visitors. Trips can be as short as 2-hours or be an all day excursion. Though most will place you inside the sled to enjoy the ride in warmth, some will allow you the chance to drive your own sled, being in complete control of your mushing team as you follow the road or groomed trail. Kids truly enjoy this special activity.
When preparing for a dog sled trip, dress in layers as with any outdoor winter activity. Bring sunscreen, goggles or sunglasses, gloves and most certainly some head protection against wind chill. The rest is typically provided by your musher/outfitter.
