Leaving Canyon Village and heading west will take you on a 12 mile jaunt to Norris Geyser Basin. Though the distance is 12 miles, it will probably take longer than 20 minutes to make the trip, depending on visitor traffic and wildlife spottings in the area.

The major point of interest on this stretch of road is the Fire Exhibit. The Exhibit is located about 9 miles west of Canyon Village and houses rooms of exhibits explaining and demonstrating the effects of deep forest fires on wildlife and the park itself. You can take a walk along the boardwalk to see the devastating aftermath of the 1988 Yellowstone fires and see that even after 16 years the landscape has been changed. The exhibits inside the building take you step by step through the fire process and what each means to the forest as a whole.

There is also a nice picnic area 2.5 miles before you reach Geyser Basin which is a perfect place to stop for a little snack and/or to enjoy the Virginia Cascade. To be able to see the cascade you'll have to take the one way Virginia Cascade road. The 60 foot falls can be seen from the road and are spectacular! The falls are nestled in heavily forested trees and foliage, but you can't miss them! Don't miss visiting them and make sure you have lots of film in your camera!

For those interested in the fishing along this stretch of road, the Gibson River just below the Virginia Cascade is host to many trout including, brook, brown, and rainbow.
