Shoshone Lake
Shoshone Lake, the largest backcountry lake in the United States, is not accessible by car.
You can either hike to the lake, or paddle from Lewis Lake. Shoshone Lake is restricted to hand-paddled watercraft only, no motorized boats.
Shoshone Lake also provides access to the Shoshone Geyser Basin. Reaching the basin requires either an eight mile hike from Lone Star Geyser or a canoe trip across both Lewis and Shoshone Lakes. The basin is incredibly pristine due to its remote location. No boardwalks exist, so please take care while exploring. One man was actually killed in 1988 when he fell into a hot pool. The Shoshone Geyser Basin contains an estimated 110 thermal features, making it well worth the effort in getting there.
