Self Guided Hikes
Get out of the car and stretch your legs on one of the following self-guided trails. There are trail guides available for 50 cents at each trail:
Mammoth Hot Springs
This walk takes you through the ever-changing landscape of travertine terraces that have been sculpted by hot spring activity. Some areas are active while others are remnants of previous activity. There is also a scenic drive in the area.
Fort Yellowstone
Located at Mammoth Hot Springs, this walking tour focuses on the history of Fort Yellowstone. Constructed during the late 1800's and early 1900's when the US Army managed the Park, they are now the National Park Service headquarters.
Canyon Area
The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River is extremely colorful. You can view the river and its magnificent waterfalls from both the Upper and Lower Falls overlooks. Other viewpoints include Inspiration, Grandview, and Artist Point.
Fountain Paint Pot
Four types of hydrothermal features are found here. Geysers, Hot Springs, Fumaroles and mudpots scatter the earth on this self-guided hike. The walk is located 8 miles north of Old Faithful.
Norris Geyser Basin
This basin is the most dynamic and hottest of all of the geyser basin's in the Park. Included are both Steamboat, the world's tallest geyser, and Echinus, the world's largest acidic geyser.
Mud Volcano Area
These turbulent and explosize mudpots are very impressive. Don't be dissuaded by the smell of the Sulphor Caldron. This hike is located on the road between Lake and Canyon, just a short 6 miles north of Fishing Bridge.
Old Faithful
The most popular feature in the Park. This is the location of the largest concentration of geysers in the world. You can view Old Faithful and then walk the various trails to hundreds of geysers and hot springs.
West Thumb Geyser Basin
There are many boiling springs in this basin that discharge their waters into Yellowstone Lake. With the Absoraka Mountains in the background, this is a must do hike.
Forces of the Northern Range
This hike allows you to study the forces that shaped the landscape of this area. Exhibits guide you through the secrets behind the volcanoes, glaciers and fire that created this land.
