Overview

The Great Fountain Geyser, along the Firehole Lake Drive in Yellowstone National Park, erupts over 100 feet into the air, sometimes 200 feet. If you are lucky enough to witness an eruption, you’ll see a dazzling display of nature’s power.

Location

The Great Fountain Geyser is located on Lake Firehole Drive in Yellowstone Park between Old Faithful and the Norris Geyser Basin, near the Fountain Paint Pots.

Seasons

Although Yellowstone National Park is open the year through, many interior roads close during the winter. The Great Fountain Geyser may only be accessible via snow vehicles during some months.

Geyser Activity

Great Fountain Geyser is a fountain-type geyser, the most popular of its kind in the park. It erupts through a pool of water in a series of bursts. Intervals between eruptions range from 8 to 15 hours, thus it’s wise to visit the Old Faithful Visitor Center where you can find the predicted times for eruption. In this way you can plan your visit. It can usually be predicted within an hour or two of eruption.

Great Fountain is named a major geyser as it can erupt up to 200 feet high, but the more common height reached is less than 100 feet. Duration of the spouting of water is usually an hour, but it has lasted as long as two hours.
