The mountain hamlets of Cooke City and Silver Gate, Montana are the hubs to 'America's most spectacular drive', The Beartooth Highway. This spectacular highway climbs through alpine scenery from Cooke City to an elevation of 10,947 feet to then arrive on the doorstep of Red Lodge, Montana. Though Cooke City and Silver Gate are open year-round (thanks to
Yellowstone National Park plows), the Beartooth Highway coming from Red
Lodge is only open during the summer months (late May through late October).
During winter months, local residents gain access to the rest of the state through Mammoth Hot Springs (inside the park) and eventually the north entrance at Gardiner, Montana. Cooke City is both a winter and summer paradise. In summer, the surrounding Beartooth Mountains offer unbelievable views, hiking, fishing, wildflower meadows, views of Rocky Mountain sheep and goats, and is a popular route for motorcyclists touring Yellowstone and the rest of America. In winter, it is a pre-eminent destination for snowmobiling enthusiasts who seek to conquer its backcountry bowls and lengthy trails.
By contrast, Silver Gate is a quiet community that strives to encourage visitors who appreciate the more pedestrian forms of recreation. Local lodges and stores cater to wildlife photographers, backcountry and X-C ski enthusiasts, snowshoers, backpackers, fishermen and lovers of fine food & beverages.
