Canyon Village

  • Lupine Loop Walk - 9am Daily from June 24 to Sep 30
    Walk along the upper Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River, then along an established trail through meadows and forest, finally looping back to the parking area. Explore the geology and natural history of the canyon area, while enjoying a bit of its backcountry. Meet a park ranger at Uncle Tom's Parking Lot on the South Rim Drive (road to Artist Point) for this moderate walk of approximately 3 miles. 2.5 hours.
  • Walking the Edge - 9am and 3pm Daily from  May 27 to Sep 30
    Enjoy learning about the ecology, geology, and history of the canyon while walking along the South Rim Trail with a ranger. Gain stunning views of the Yellowstone River, Upper and Lower Falls, and the gorgeous colors of the canyon walls. Meet a park ranger at Uncle Tom's Parking Lot on the South Rim Drive (road to Artist Point) for this easy walk of approximately 1 mile. 1.5 hours.

Fishing Bridge and Lake Village

  • Storm Point Saunter - 10am Daily June 3 to Sep 3
    Wander along the ever-changing lakeshore and through a diversity of landscapes including a lush meadow dotted with wildflowers and an ancient forest of spruce, pine, and fir. Experience Yellowstone in its true splendor. Meet at Indian Pond and the Storm Point trailhead, 3 miles east of Fishing Bridge. Easy 2.3 mile hike. 2 hours.

Grant Village and West Thumb

  • Scenic Lake Overlook - 9:30am Daily June 17 to Sep 3
    Ascend through meadows, forests and past thermal features to reach a picturesque view of Yellowstone Lake surrounded by the Absaroka Mountains. Meet at the Lake Overlook Trailhead in West Thumb Geyser Basin parking lot. Moderate 2 miles. 2 hours
  • Hot Water Wilderness - 10:30am and 4pm Daily at June 3 to Sep 3
    Take a stroll along the beautiful shores of Yellowstone Lake while exploring the origins of glittering geysers, belching mud pots, and emerald hot springs in West Thumb's dynamic geyser basin. Meet at the West Thumb Information Station. Roundtrip distance is .75 mile. Easy. Accessible with assistance 1.5 hours

Madison

  • Harlequin Lake Walk - Mondays at 10am from June 11 to Aug 20
    Join a park ranger for a moderately easy 1-1/2 mile round trip hike to a beautiful and secluded home for waterfowl and beaver. Meet at the third pullout, 1.5 miles west of Madison Junction on the west entrance road, opposite the Harlequin Lake Trailhead. Bring water, raingear, good hiking shoes and a snack. 2 hours.

Mammoth Hot Springs

  • Discovery Hike - Sundays and Fridays at 8:30am from June 17 to Aug 17
    Experience the wilder side of the park as you hike through open sagebrush and Douglas fir forest to the foot of Wraith Falls on Lupine Creek. This is an easy 1 mile ranger-led hike. Meet at Wraith Falls trailhead, 5 miles east of Mammoth Hot Springs. 1 to 1.5 hours
  • Hot Springs Terraces Walk - 9am Daily from June 3 to Sep 3
    Explore Yellowstone's powerful geologic past and present while meandering around Mammoth Hot Springs Terraces. Learn how these dynamic travertine formations are unique among park thermal features. Route climbs stairs. May be strenuous for some. Meet at Opal Terrace across from Liberty Cap rock formation. 1.5 hours.
  • Calling in the Cavalry Walk - 6pm Daily from June 10 to Sep 3
    In its early days, Yellowstone National Park was protected by the U. S. Army. Join a ranger on this short, relaxed walk around Fort Yellowstone to learn about important historic park events and to discover the role the military played in protecting Yellowstone. Meet in front of Albright Visitor Center. Accessible. 1 hour

Norris

  • Windows Into Yellowstone - 9:30am Daily from May 27 to Sep 30
    Experience the muddy caldrons, acid geysers and clear pools of Norris Geyser Basin. Join a park ranger for a walk through this magical land and learn about the park's geologic past, present, and future. Meet at the Norris Geyser Basin Museum. Bring water, sunglasses and suncreen. 1.5 hours
  • World's Tallest - 2pm and 3pm Daily from  May 23 to Sep 30
    Discover how geysers work at the world's tallest active geyser. Meet at Steamboat Geyser, a 15-minute walk from the Norris Geyser Basin parking lot. In rainy weather, the talk will be held at the Norris Geyser Basin Museum. Check with ranger at information desk. 20 minutes
  • Wild Yellowstone - 2:30pm Daily from May 23 to Sep 3
    A park ranger will share insights into a fascinating aspect of Yellowstone's wild nature. Meet at Steamboat Geyser, a 15 minute walk from the Norris Geyser Basin parking lot. In rainy weather, the talk will be held at the Norris Geyser Basin Museum. Check with ranger at information desk. 20 minutes

Old Faithful

  • Geyser Hill Walk - 8:30am Daily from May 27 to Sep 3
    Geyser Hill is at the heart of the world's greatest concentration of geysers. Explore this special corner of the park and learn about the relationship between Yellowstone's volcanic history and hydrothermal features on this 1-1/4 mile walk. Meet outside on the geyser side of the Old Faithful Visitor Education Center. 1.5 hours
  • Mystic Falls Walk - 9am Daily from June 3 to Aug 25
    Explore a special part of the Yellowstone Ecosystem while enjoying this 2-1/2 mile walk through Biscuit Basin to Mystic Falls. Meet at Firehole River Bridge adjacent to Biscuit Basin parking lot, 2 miles north of Old Faithful. Moderately strenuous. 1.5 hours
  • Black Sand Walk - 1pm Daily from June 10 to Aug 25
    Discover a lesser-known gem. As you stroll through one of Yellowstone's most striking hydrothermal areas, you'll learn about volcanic geology and the unique history of Black Sand Basin on this half-mile walk. Meet at Black Sand Basin parking lot, one mile north of Old Faithful. 1 hour
  • Stroll around Old Faithful - 3:30pm Daily from June 3 to Sep 3
    Take an easy .75 mile walk with a ranger around Old Faithful Geyser. View dramatic hot springs and geysers while gaining insight into Yellowstone's dynamic geology. Meet outside on the geyser side of the Old Faithful Visitor Education Center. 45 minutes
  • Geyser Discovery Stroll - 5:30pm Daily from May 27 to Sep 3
    Learn about one of the rarest geological features on earth-geysers. Accompany a ranger through the Upper Geyser Basin exploring the world of geysers. Meet at Castle Geyser, 1/2 mile west, or about a 15 minute walk, from Old Faithful. 1.5 hours

Overview: 

Stories unfold on the easy to moderate hikes throughout the park all led by a ranger. Ask any question you want while taking in one of walks during the summer and fall seasons in Yellowstone National Park.

When and Where:

Typically during the Summer and Fall seasons. Times and days vary by scheduled walk. Most walks will take place mid morning or mid afternoon. The locations vary. In the past walks have included places around Yellowstone Lake, Storm Point, Lupine Loop and many other great park locations.

Details:

The Ranger Led Walks meets at the visitor centers of the ranger district they are in. These walks can vary from easy to moderate to family minded. Remember to always bring sunscreen, water, rain gear and of course your curiosity.
